The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has warned the medical community about potentially harmful side effects of an over-the-counter drug called Proscar, which is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).
BPH is a condition in which the prostate gland enlarges and is called an enlarged prostate. It can cause symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty starting the flow of urine or feeling thirsty.
Proscar is available by prescription only. It comes in three different strengths: 5 mg, 10 mg and 20 mg.
The FDA says Proscar is not safe for use during pregnancy. It may cause harmful side effects for the baby.
The FDA also warns about the risk of developing BPH-related health problems like high blood pressure and liver disease. This is a medical emergency, so patients should be informed immediately before taking Proscar.
The FDA’s warnings about Proscar use are based on a report by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists, which said the drug was associated with a higher risk of adverse cardiovascular events.
“While the FDA advises against using Proscar, the potential benefits outweigh any risk in patients who may be at increased risk,” says Dr. Jane Smith, the chair of the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
